About

The SAFETY PIN REVIEW, initiated in September 2011, is a biweekly literary magazine featuring work of fewer than 30 words, with a major D.I.Y. twist: in addition to being published online, each piece is hand-painted onto a cloth back patch, which is attached (via safety pins) to one of our operatives—a collective network of authors, punks, thieves, and anarchists—who wear it everywhere they go for a week.

We’re looking for literary quality, hard-hitting stories with an afterburn. Scare us. Intimidate us. Make us horny. Make us swoon. Send us only your very best.

Essentially, each will have two audiences: those who come to the website to read the magazine, and then an entirely unintentional audience, i.e., the random people who see one of us roaming around with your story pinned to our back. Thirty words is short enough—you can read it by accident. Whether they like it or not, your words will stick with strangers. Guerilla, subversive, subconscious lit, sneaking into the minds of friend and stranger alike. We think all of this is awesome.

The SAFETY PIN REVIEW is curated and edited by Simon Jacobs, a writer of no particular renown. You can find him and this zine on Twitter under @mohawko and @safetypinreview, respectively.

Any questions/comments/love (monetary and/or sexual) can be addressed to safetypinreview [at] gmail [dot] com.

What are you waiting for? Let’s get this show on the road.

  1. […] The Safety Pin Review: This is either awesomely punk or toe-curlingly pretentious, depending on one’s point of view. The Safety Pin Review is a magazine designed to be worn – very short stories that exist for a week in the wild. It’s ART, kids. […]

  2. Kevin Montiel Says:

What is the criteria for these stories? I submitted one and the ‘curator’ responded saying it was not material safety pin was looking for.

  3. Yurbiggust Fan Says:

    Hey, how’s this one:

“It’s punk art, asshole. You obviously don’t get it.”

  4. Sweet! I am mos def submitting some shit to you guys!

  5. […] Safety Pin Review is literary journal that will not only publish your flash fic/short prose poem online, but will also have someone from their “collective network of authors, punks, thieves, and anarchists” wear it as a patch for a week and document people’s reactions! I think it’s neat.  […]

  6. I would like to become an operative? Is that possible?
